| THE CASTLE OF ALVITO By Liceo Scientifico L. da Vinci - Sora "The person who is wandering trough the ruins of the Alvito castle, in front of those sad ruins of walls and towers that make still here and there appear some vestiges of gothic architecture and reveal the old majesty of the building more than by the sad meditation inspired by the ruin, is provoked by a feeling of indignation against the times and the men work.. Perhaps of the men more than the time" (Domenico Santoro, Alvito). HISTORY The castle was built for the first time at the end of XI century, where already along the Albeto Mount slopes, there were human installations. It was built by a count of Aquino descending from the longobard dukes of Benevento. At the end of the XII century, CIVITA SANCTI URBANI, a property of Cassino, born before the thousand year around Saint Urbano Church at east of Albeto Mount along the hill that is called today, of the Civita, little by little began to be depopulated. A part of the population established around the castle near the place that became the "Cittadella" surrounded by its walls with its three doors. Another part established along the slope below helping the birth of the new human groups, tight around a church, that contributed to the formation of Comino Valley. The medieval castle, just as we can see it today is what remains of the rebuilding after the earthquake that in the year 1349 has made lots of damages to the strong walls. The new building was made immediately in the year 1350 thanks to Rostaino Cantelmo whose ancestors had arrived in Italy among the suit of Carlo d'Angiò. Cantelmo entered in possession of the castle because he was related with the previous lords, the counts of Aquino that died on account of the earthquake in the year 1349. The Cantelmo had been lords of Alvito till 1497. During the XVI century, Cantelmo were followed by Borgia, Navarra, Cardona and Gallio. These last, after becoming dukes abandoned the castle and built the Ducal Palace. These lords remained there till the year 1806. |

| In the picture there is the entrance to the court of the castle (West side). The pointed arch is placed on slim projecting shutters. At the upper part there is the Cantelmo blazon that is formed by a rampant lion that isn't enough visible today. The castle that was still belonging to the first owners, the lords of Aquino had been rebuilt again in 1340 by Rostaino Cantelmo that became the new owner just as it was to be seen on the tablet that had been put above the blazon (look at the picture). But nowadays we cannot see any trace of it. Fortunately the words of the epigraph have been saved just in time. The castle was the nucleus of the Cittadella that was placed around it and that surrounded the valley that nowadays is Alvito. When the Gallio lords arrived in 1595, the castle was already abandoned and the residence of those lords became the Ducal Palace that nowadays is the headquarters of the municipal administration. | ![]() |
